Join us for a beautiful weeknd on the Black Forest Trail (BFT) which is considered one of the most gorgeous, but difficult backpacking trails in Pennsylvania. The southern section will challenge you with a demanding series of climbs, descents and stream crossings, but will reward you with beautiful hemlock forests and tremendous views of gorges and valleys. We will start out late Friday morning at Slate Run and ascend 1,100 feet to the top of the ridgeline and take in vistas of the the Slate Run Valley to the east. We will continue along the ridgeline and pass through Foster's Run then descend into the valley of Little Slate Run and where we will camp in an old growth hemlock forest (about 6 miles).
Saturday morning will begin with an 800 foot ascent back up to the ridgeline where we will be treated to vistas of valleys to the north and south. We will descend into Naval Run then climb 1,200 feet to the top of Hemlock Mountain where vistas offer sweeping views of Pine Creek to the east and valleys to the south. After taking in the views, we will continue along the mountain's backbone and descend to a camp along the cascade of Callahan Run (about 9 miles).
Sunday morning we will ascend 1,200 feet to retake the ridge and enjoy another vista. From here the trail will mellow out as we hike out of the forest where you will have the option to join us for lunch before heading home (about 4 miles).
For experienced backpackers looking to conquer a challenging hike among hemlock forests and take in expansive views, this is for you! To register, contact John Dalvet at firstname.lastname@example.org.
This is John's last qualifying colead to become a leader, so be sure to bring along wit, a good attitude, and the outdoor spirit so we can all make memories for him!!!
