Learn to rock climb using safe set up and climbing on a top rope! This one-day course is intended for gym climbers with a modest amount of belay and climbing experience who want to make the transition to outdoor rock climbing. Course topics will include:
•Crag etiquette and minimizing impacts
•Review: belay standard, communications, safety checks, gear basics (helmets)
•Rock assessment and rock hazards; other outdoor climbing hazards
•Static vs dynamic ropes (sizes and protecting rope from rock abrasion)
•Knots: figure 8 follow-through, bowline, double bowline, BHK, double fisherman's, prusik
•Redundancy: at the anchor and master point
•Locating a climb and climber edge protection during set-up
•Natural vs. bolted anchors
Upon completion, participants should have the necessary skills to begin top-rope climbing outdoors with a partner of equal or greater ability.
Participants must bring their own climbing harness, helmet, and shoes; and belay device and locking carabiner.
Maximum of 10 participants.
