Overview

Join us for 7 days of cycling through ancient Umbrian hillsides on a moderately paced town to town touring and tasting adventure. The trip winds through uncrowded countryside reminiscent of adjacent Tuscany starting in the district capital of Perugia and ending in Orvieto. Cycle to small hilltop villages such as Assisi (birthplace of St. Francis), Spello (narrow flower filled streets), Deruta (famous pottery town), Bevagna (medieval town square), Montefalco (home of excellent wine), Spoleto (home of an international arts festival), and Orvieto (colorful façade on its gothic cathedral). Covering a total of about 165 miles total with options adding on extra miles, the cycling will require a moderate pace which will allow for sightseeing stops along the way. Enjoy a cooking class, wine tastings, and an organized hunt for truffles on a truffle farm with specially trained dogs. Riders must be able to cycle town to town up to 40 miles/ day at a 12-15 mph pace since no SAG wagon is included and train routes are limited. Cyclists should be prepared to do about 1500' to 1800' of climbing each day (total rolling climbs over 20-40 miles). There are some optional days off from cycling for sightseeing in towns and some side trips for extra riding. Includes luggage transfers to each town. In this unspoiled part of Umbria there's an almost spiritual, timeless atmosphere dating back before the romans to the Etruscans. Small chapels mark the ancient pilgrim routes and magnificent cathedrals showcase the Gothic and Roman architecture of the 12th and 13th centuries. Not only the landscape is wonderful to enjoy by pedaling, on this tour we also will find time to taste the traditional Umbrian food and the excellent Montefalco red wines. The region is hilly so all days will have a degree of climbing involved but you will be rewarded with wonderful views. Van transfer one day will bypass the most difficult biking section. Many walled towns sit atop steep and rocky hills which afforded defense in more turbulent times including the tiny fortified Civita di Bagnoregio. Daily luggage transfer will transport not only what you brought and also what you pick up along the way. People looking for a balance of cycling and sightseeing who enjoy exploring new food and drink will find this trip very enjoyable.
