Where are you with your Sea Kayaking? Are you ready to kick it up a few notches? July 27-29, 2018 is a Rough Water Kayak paddling training weekend. Two or Three day options to push your comfort zone in the progressive and active coastal conditions of eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island. We will work on BC 2* and 3* skill sets while playing in Tide Races, Rock Hopping and Shore Break Surf. In addition to paddling in rough water conditions, we will be practicing rescues, towing and advanced boat maneuvers. Our BCU Coach 4, Greg Paquin of Kayak Waveology, will be giving instruction for the weekend. Those that have previously attended the training had a fun time and came away a more competent paddler. What paddling experience will you need for this weekend? A spirit to push yourself as part of a group of fun seeking and adventurous participants is necessary. Must be a paddler exposed to, and moderately comfortable in, open water conditions with variable sea states as this is the environment we will be working in. [Intermediate to advanced skills required: paddling 2 hours in winds up to 15 mph or higher and paddling in swell and waves up to 1 meter. Assisted and self-rescue skill is a must.] A roll is not required. However, expect to get wet! Keep in mind this is to be a learning weekend. Equipment: A Sea Kayak greater than 16 ft with dual bulkheads; the ability to transport your kayak and gear; paddle, PFD, spray skirt, tow belt, helmet, rescue equipment. Appropriate water apparel for frequent immersion. Paddle kit, dry bag, lunch, water….. *Some equipment and kayaks may be obtained from Kayak Waveology. You can arrange this privately with Greg. Greg has a supply of NDK boats and gear that you may wish to try. The AMC will not be providing equipment for this weekend. Lodging will be at the Burlingame Campground in Charleston RI. Camping costs and group food will be shared by participants. All those camping will lend a hand. Other lodging options may be available on your own. The coaching fee is $300.00 for a two day option and $400.00 for a 3 day option. This coaching fee will be made directly to Kayak Waveology via his website. Registration must first be made with the AMC Registrar/ Leader. An AMC fee of $5.00 will also be collected. A group of a maximum of 10 members is desirable.
