Overview

7pm Northboro Historical Society, 50 Main St. (RT.20). Norman Sims is a retired honors professor from UMASS Amherst and a past regional director for the AMC. A longtime whitewater canoeist and an active member of both AMC and the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association, Sims has a small collection of antique Morris wood-and canvas canoes. This is his sixth book. This presentation, based on Canoes: A Natural History in North America, gives a whirlwind history of a singular American artifact, so unchanged that a Native from 5,000 years ago would immediately recognize a modern canoe and know what to do with it. From dugouts to birch bark to wood and modern synthetic canoes, the uses have varied from the fur trade to courting to modern recreation. Norm will introduce us to some people we have never met before. And he may bring an 1890's wood-and-canvas canoe with leather seats. Bring dish to share. New Members/Visitors Welcome. Registration Required for Orientation (6:30). Jean Langley. membership@amcworcester.org
