This course is designed for individuals who are actively teaching others backcountry skills or providing recreation information to the public, with a particular focus on sea kayak activities. Through classroom discussions, lectures and a four-day sea kayak trip, this course will cover the seven Leave No Trace principles and discuss wildland ethics, as well as give the participants the tools and techniques for disseminating these low-impact skills to other outdoor enthusiasts. Participants could include a mixture of federal agency partners, educators, outdoor retailers, youth group and outing club leaders, and other individuals. Our first night will be in the comfortable Maine Island Lodge, operated by Maine Sport Outfitters. For the remainder of the course we will camp at a designated campsites on islands in Muscongus Bay. the course agenda and provides in-depth information on the overall Leave No Trace program, the LNT Center for Outdoor Ethics, and the AMC's history with LNT educational initiatives. Group and individual preparations for the field component of the course are also tended to on the first day including repackaging food and sorting gear. Participants will be asked to use gear that makes the least amount of impact while out on the trail. You may bring your own gear if you prefer but may be requested to share with other participants.
