Overview

Learn valuable leadership skills while gaining practice and confidence in your ability to lead your peers on trips in the outdoors! You will learn lifelong skills on this continuous 14 day backpacking experience. This trip provides excellent instruction for teens on managing groups, dealing with conflict, traveling confidently in the outdoors, and reacting to unplanned situations. You will focus on gaining the knowledge and experience outdoor leaders need to be successful, from route, food, and equipment planning to team work, communication and decision making. For ages: 14-16. General Itinerary: Day 1: After an introductory meeting with instructors, group and parents, gear is checked and issued. After lunch, the group heads to the trailhead to begin the hike to the first campsite where they learn about camp set up, cooking on a camp stove, and sleeping comfortably in the backcountry. Day 2-6: The group makes their way through the wild river wilderness, moving camp each day and refining their wilderness skills as they go. They will learn about navigation, camp craft, LNT, leadership, decision making and work as a team to accomplish their goal each day. Each participant will have the chance to be "leader of the day" working with another peer to co-lead the group, practicing and refining their leadership as they go. Day 7: The group will layover at their campsite and hike to a nearby trailhead to resupply with food and equipment. Day 8-13: The group will continue to travel each day to a new campsite, moving into the Carter Range and northern Presidential's. Participants will continue to have opportunities to practice leadership and decision making and gain more independence from the instructors as they build confidence in their backcountry abilities. By the end of the trip they will feel the reward of having gained competence and comfort in their wilderness skills as well as their ability to be a leader of a group of peers. Day 14: The group will hike out to the trailhead, where they will be picked up and transported back to Pinkham Notch. They will have lunch, de-issue borrowed equipment and debrief their trip before being picked up in the afternoon.
