Overview

Wakely Mountain is #66 on the Adirondack 100 highest list at 3670' and has a fire tower on top. It is located 1 mile before reaching the Wakely Dam entrance to the Moose River Plains. Our 4 day trip covering about 24 miles will will consist of the following itinerary. Day 1 travel on a snowmobile trail 3 miles and then head north on the N-P up to a mile to find a camping spot. Day 2 Climb Wakely Mountain and return to camp. Figure 4 miles each way. Day 3, continue breaking out the trail to Wakely Mountain or head north on the N-P as far as we want and return. Figure 4 miles each way. Day 4, hike out 4 miles. Please note that this is a scouting trip for the leaders. We have not climbed Wakely Mountain before or been north on the N-P. Our focus on this trip is more about teaching safe wilderness winter camping and hiking skills than bagging the summit. We may have to melt snow for water. We have had winter trips where we spent all 4 days breaking trail in beautiful surroundings but never got close to a summit. This trip requires previous winter camping experience in cold temperatures. All participants will need snowshoes, a winter sleeping bag rated to at least -20 degrees F and have winter boots with a removable liner. No single layer or leather boots will be approved. Under other on the registration form, please list what sleeping bag and boots you have or that you need our advice on what to get. Leaders will be using mountaineering sleds and we have some spare sleds we can loan out.

Due to the early start we suggest staying nearby the night before. We will meet for breakfast at a place to be announced to participants. Parking may be a challenge in this remote location and you may have to pay a small fee to park in a private lot not far from the trailhead for snowmobile users.

Leader

I have been leading backpacking trips for the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club since 1975. I enjoy taking the time to look at the scenery and have a relatively slow pace. I am patient with beginners and enjoy helping them learn new skills.
