Teens ages 17-19, join this unique opportunity to learn about trails stewardship and develop your outdoor leadership skills! This program is particularly suited for those who are interested in learning about conservation-related careers or who want an in-depth backcountry experience while accomplishing meaningful trail work projects. This program also includes a two-day Leave No Trace Trainer course. The Four-Week Leadership Crew is appropriate for volunteers who have prior camping, backpacking, hiking, or volunteer trail work experience. Arrival is Sunday afternoon at 2:00 at Pinkham Notch Visitor Center, where volunteers will meet their crew and leaders, pack up food, tools, camping equipment and personal gear. Packs weigh 40-60 lbs. Crews will then be driven by van to a nearby trailhead and hike in to set up their first camp on Sunday afternoon. The nearby trail work project may involve installing drainage structures, building rock steps, constructing bog bridges, restoring impacted areas, building cairns and scree walls, and other trail maintenance projects. The work will be strenuous, and we will be out rain or shine. After working, crews may enjoy a hike, swim, or game at camp. Crew members all take turns helping with meal preparation and camp chores throughout the week. After a week in the backcountry of the White Mountains, the crew will hike out, re-supply and be driven to AMC's Cardigan Reservation for their second week of trail work. The third week provides an opportunity to take a break from trail work while learning about and visiting an AMC-managed backcountry campsite and mountain hut, as well as the Mt. Washington Observatory and US Forest Service visitor center - a great opportunity to learn about employment/career opportunities. The crew concludes their four-week experience by taking the lead on the final week's stewardship project in the White Mountains. The crew returns to AMC's Pinkham Notch Visitor Center on Friday to unpack, debrief, clean tools and say farewell before 2:00 departure. * Please note that, due to renovation work on Camp Dodge Volunteer Center, the White Mountain Crews are limited in number and structured differently this year. Friday night accommodation is not included, nor is supervision before scheduled arrival time and after scheduled departure. Leaders will provide transportation to and from North Conway for volunteers who would like to take the Concord Coach Line on Sunday and Friday afternoons ( Please contact our registrar at 603-466-8156 for more information. ** Registrations will be processed beginning on January 2, 2019. All applications received prior to that date will be processed by our registrar in the order they were received.
