Overview

The 2-day West River Fall Release is one of the biggest paddling events in New England with shuttle-serviced Class 3 whitewater. We'll run the Class 2 section as a group for a morning warmup on Saturday. This is a really fun, pretty intense run with bigger waves than many Class 2 runs. After the warmup, we'll move upstream to scout The Dumpling watching other boaters making the mistakes we want to avoid. Then, we'll do at least one run on the Class 3, possible multiple runs on Sunday. To paddle the Class 3 with this group, you must have previously paddled Class 2 or 3 with one of the trip leaders. If we don't know you, you can "audition" on the Class 2 on Saturday morning. This is a classic Class 3 run: two-plus miles of almost continuous rapids with large waves, fast currents and lots of rocks to dodge. Friendly eddies are scarce and swims can be long and uncomfortable. That said, it's a good choice for a first full-on Class 3 run as it's easy to bail out at any point and walk your boat back to the State Park along the shuttle road. For more information: AMC NH/Vermont River Guide page 125 or follow the link below. Paddlers will need a whitewater-capable canoe or kayak with flotation (mandatory). Kayaks and C-1s must have a tight-fitting neoprene sprayskirt or your boat will swamp. Rentals are available from NH AMC (see link below) but arrangements must be made well in advance. All paddlers must wear a helmet and PFD at all times while on the water. Many of us will base at the nearby Winhall Brook Campground (link below). There are usually sites available. It's much quieter and more relaxed than the party at Jamaica State Park. There's no fee for this trip, however Jamaica State Park requires a $4/day pass for entry. Shuttle rides are $15/each, $25 for an unlimited day pass. Campsites at Winhall Brook range from $20-$28/night. Please register with either of the trip leaders.

The AMC was there for me when I wanted to learn how to paddle a kayak on whitewater. Now I'm leading trips to give others the same opportunity.
