Overview

AMC is looking for new Information Volunteers for the Corman AMC Harriman Outdoor Center for the 2019 operating season (May-October). Harriman Outdoor Center offers hiking, paddling, and camping opportunities in the heart of Harriman State Park at Breakneck Pond. Information Volunteers (Info Vols) are passionate about helping people enjoy the outdoors and learn about the natural world. They greet guests in a friendly manner, orient them to the facility, and offer advice about hiking trails and outdoor activity planning. Info Vols also provide information about conservation and natural history, help guests at the waterfront with boats and equipment, promote AMC membership, and monitor campsites. Interested volunteers may also lead nature walks and activities. Essential qualifications include hiking experience, a desire to help others enjoy the outdoors, and an outgoing, friendly personality. Familiarity with hiking trails in Harriman State Park, camping skills, and basic canoeing/kayaking are helpful. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and pass a criminal background check. Schedule: Harriman Info Vols typically serve on weekends, late May through mid-October. Local volunteers can volunteer for full days on Saturdays, or half days on Friday afternoon/evening or Sunday morning. When tent platform space is available, volunteers who live farther away are welcome to pitch a tent and volunteer for a whole weekend, arriving Friday afternoon and staying through Sunday morning. Commitment: Commit to volunteering at least 32 hours per year, for at least three years. Participate in a training weekend each spring for the first two years as a volunteer, and once every three years after that. 2019 Training: The volunteer training weekend will be held at AMC's Mohican Outdoor Center, in New Jersey, April 12-14. The majority of the weekend will include training sessions applicable to volunteering at any AMC Outdoor Program Center as well as a focus on the NY/NJ region. The last piece of the training weekend (starting mid-morning Sunday) will include a facility tour at Harriman Outdoor Center and training with the Harriman Manager. Cost*

Adult: $40 member
*The $40 fee is for the training weekend, and it includes lodging, meals, and all training sessions. Lodging is in shared bunkrooms.
