Overview

This is a short but very enjoyable Class II with a couple of Class III features (which can be run or easily avoided). We are going to make a long day of it, combining a Class II run with a lot of very basic whitewater rescue skills theory and practice. We will stop at every interesting feature along the route to create realistic scenarios and practice basic rescue techniques. Topics will include: • Safety check before setting out • Self rescue principles • Swimming in whitewater • Boat rescue of swimmers • Floating boat recovery • Floating equipment recovery • Throw rope rescues • Tethered rescues • Wading in whitewater • Incident scene management and debriefing Note: More complicated and technical scenarios such as multiple victims, foot entrapments, river crossings, Z drags and pinned boats are beyond the scope of this practice session. We will focus on only the basics that every Class II boater (and especially every whitewater trip leader) should know and have practiced to proficiency. We will all take turns as "victims" and rescuers. Please come prepared to spend a good part of the day IN the water, whatever the air and water temperature. Bring a throw bag (everyone should have one) and any other rescue equipment you normally carry (tow tether, carabiners, pin kit, etc.). If you own or have access to a rescue PFD with a quick-release belt, please bring that. Requirements for the trip include a whitewater-capable boat with sprayskirt and flotation, protective footwear with sturdy soles and closed-toes (rocks are sharp), a PFD, helmet and whistle. You may also want gloves, noseplugs and insect repellent. Helmet and PFD must be worn at all times while on or near the water. Lunch will probably be on the river, bring adequate food and water. Note: we are limiting this to 8 participants. If the trip fills we will waitlist it. If enough people are interested, we will plan on adding additional rescue skills practice sessions over the summer
