Registration is not required for this activity. However, you may wish to contact the leader(s) if you have any questions.

Tallman Mountain State Park (Rockland Co, NY). 11:17 am. 6 miles, mostly flat but some rolling terrain. This will be a moderate hike through the Park where we will view the berms and salt marsh and learn its interesting history as a former oil tank farm. Then it's out the Piermont Pier to follow in the footsteps of the 40,000 US Troops per month who marched to the waiting ships to transport them to the Atlantic Theatre during WWII. We will see many sights as we walk the mile-long Piermont pier halfway across the Hudson! Finally, we will learn of the historic transformation of Piermont, NY from a blue collar factory town to its present day status. Trails include the Tallman Bike Path and the Long Path. Bring lunch and water. Adverse conditions will alter the route. Don't worry, this will be a moderate-paced fun hike. There are many alternate routes in case of various levels of snow on the ground. Hiking boots or good sneakers recommended. We meet in front of 450 Piermont Ave. (building with mural), corner of Tate and Piermont Ave. in Piermont NY. Park down Gair St. in municipal lot D off to the right. Do Not park on Piermont Avenue. Public transportation from the city is available on the 10:40 AM Rockland Coaches 9A bus from the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal to meet us in Piermont by 11:17. Tell the driver you are going to Piermont, NY. The bus will drop you off right in front of 450 Piermont Ave. (building with mural) on the corner of Tate and Piermont Aves. where we will be waiting. You may take the earlier bus from Port Authority but you will be an hour early. There are plenty of shops in town to pass the time. Steady snow, rain, or serious threat of thunderstorms will modify or cancel hike.

This was a well run, very informative, very professional hike. We all had a real great time. Great job John. Thanks John for the wine too! Lots of fun hiking with a great group of people. Lunch and conversation after was very nice too. Thanks John for organizing. Driving Directions

Go north on the Palisades Parkway to exit 4, "Route 9W". At the end of the ramp, turn left onto Route 9W North. Cross over the border into New York State, and then go exactly two more miles on 9W. Turn right at the sign for "TALLMAN STATE PARK". (This is Rockland Road). DO NOT ENTER TALLMAN STATE PARK! Stay straight on Rockland Road until it ends at a stop sign. At the stop, turn right onto Ferdon Ave. The road goes straight for a while and makes a sharp left. You'll soon go through a traffic light. At this point, the name of the road changes to Piermont Ave. Go around a curve and the next corner on the left is the meeting spot. Park down Gair Street in Lot D right across from where we meet.

View over the Piermont Marsh.
