Overview

If you've ever wondered what's it's like to paddle a whitewater kayak on flowing water, this is your chance to "test the waters" in a supported environment. We'll start with a morning on flat water to introduce you to the basic paddle strokes and edging skills you need to steer your kayak around obstacles. Topics covered will include: - kayak outfitting (getting your kayak to fit you) - wet exit (safely exiting your kayak if you find yourself upside-down.) - sweep strokes and draw strokes (to steer your boat) - forward and backward stokes (to propel your kayak where you want it to go) - edging (to help your boat turn and keep it stable in current) In the afternoon, we'll move into gentle currents to learn: - reading whitewater (figuring out where you want to go) - basic whitewater safety (getting yourself and your gear to shore in the event of a swim) - ferrying (crossing a current without getting pulled downstream) - eddy peel out (getting into the current without flipping) - eddy entry (getting out of the current without flipping) All paddlers must wear appropriate water gear and clothing including helmet, PFD and spray skirt. We will work with you to ensure you have the proper clothing: wet/dry suit, dry top, foot wear, gloves etc. If you do not have access to a boat you may rent one for $10 per paddling day (includes boat with flotation, spray skirt, paddle, PFD and helmet) http://www.nhamcpaddlers.org/rentals.html. We will help you find one that fits you based on your height and weight. Lodging or camping fees - if you choose to camp with the group at Clear Stream Campground, cost is $10 per night paid at the campground. We have reserved several camp sites for the group. Class size is limited to 6 students in whitewater kayaks. If demand exceeds capacity for this session, we will consider running another in the summer. Graduates of this training may join us May 26-27 to build your skills on class II water.
