Paddle an easy 10-mile paddle on the South Branch of the Raritan River from Clinton to Darts Mills with a few riffles that vary with water levels. The river meanders through fields and woods covered with wild roses. We start at the Clinton Put-in located at the end of Ramsey Road. This trip is a gentle section through woodlands and fields. After 0.5 miles, the river opens to two large ponds created by dirt removal during the construction of Interstate Route 78. We will explore the ponds for turtles and frogs. Then will exit the ponds by staying on the left side. After passing under the Hamden Road Bridge, we will approach the Round Valley pumping station and a dam which will require a very easy portage on grass. We then continue and to stop for lunch at Camp Car (real bathrooms available). From Camp Car, we will continue down the river. When we reach Packer's Island it is best to stay in the left channel. After passing under the Route 31 Bridge, in 1.3 miles past Packer's Island the river will parallel route 523 on our right. The Darts Mill take-out is on the right about 350 yards from the bridge. A total of 10 Miles and about 5 to 6 hours with a lunch/bio stop. •Basic Paddling Skills Required. Must know how to steer, turn a boat and paddle in a straight line. Must be comfortable paddling in moving water with many twists, turns, and rocks/obstacles. •PFD will always be worn on the river as a requirement of the trip. Self-inflatable PFDs are NOT allowed. Kayak or Canoe OK. Recommend no boats over 14 Feet. Early Out for a shorter trip at Camp Carr can be arranged. All details will be sent to registered participant one week before scheduled day. This trip will be postponed or canceled if there is heavy rain, 70% chance or better pending heavy thunderstorms, or water level that is below 2.8 Ft. or above 9.0 Ft., as per USGS 01397000 Gauge. Kayaking is an all-weather sport so we will go in light rain. Your RSVP is REQUIRED at least 2 days before the event. Please call the trip leader after 8 AM on the day of the event to confirm that you are coming and that the trip is on.
