Overview

A three night beginner winter backpack in the Catskills. We will backpack a short distance (about 1/3 of a mile gently uphill) into the Wilderness to base camp for all three nights. Saturday we will drive to and climb Black Dome #3 on the Catskill highest with a total distance round trip of about 4 miles. This is a steep strenuous climb that may require crampons or microspikes in addition to snowshoes depending on the conditions. Sunday we will climb Windham High Peak #33 on the Catskill highest from our campsite. This is a more moderate climb of 6 miles with no ledges. The trip is suitable for people who have previous winter hiking experience who want to learn how to winter camp. People who have more experience are welcome to join us but will need to make allowances for the less experienced people in the group. Appropriate for the season winter camping equipment is required including boots with removable insulation liners; but we won't be so far from our cars that you can't be hiked out if you decide winter camping is not for you. Snowshoes will be required and used. The group will always hike together.

Leader

I have been leading backpacking trips for the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club since 1975. I enjoy taking the time to look at the scenery and have a relatively slow pace. I am patient with beginners and enjoy helping them learn new skills.
