A short 2-mile backpack to a basecamp for 1 night in the Indian Head Wilderness in the NE Catskills. Day hike options include: (1) 3,573-ft. Indian Head Mtn., a Catskill High Peak (@5 mi. RT, difficult in winter), (2) 3,100-ft. Plattekill Mtn., one of the Catskill 100 Highest (@3.5 mi. RT, intermediate), (3) Codfish Point, a fabulous view of the Hudson River & Valley (@1.5 mi. RT, easy). This outing will focus on winter camping skills. This is an end-of-winter trip suitable for those with 3-season backpacking experience AND winter day hiking experience. Experienced winter campers are welcome to join us, but will need to make accomodations for those with no winter camping experience. We will always hike as a group to assist the less experienced. Winter boots with removable insulated liners, a sleeping bag with at least a zero degree F rating and a white gas stove (e.g. MSR Whisperlite) will be required. Also required will be some combination of snowshoes, microspikes and/or crampons, depending on trail conditions. Gear can be rented. Contact leader. Pulk sleds welcome. Contact leader if you wish to discuss this outing and your readiness.
