We'll start on Bearfort Ridge and will visit West Pond and Surprise Lake. The hike will be on a variety of trails in NJ and NY. There are spectacular views in places. Hiking boots are essential. Carry lunch and at least 2 quarts of water Meeting place is the Ringwood, NJ, Park and Ride, from which we will car shuttle to the start. The meeting place can also be reached by bus from NYC (AMC NYNJ Trans. code 3A but take 8:30 a.m. bus arr. 9.51 a.m.) Hourly return service to NYC in the PM. Schedule available at . To get an update of hike status (in case of cancellation) check listing after the evening before the hike in case this has been changed from Open to Canceled. Note about hike rating - see also hike codes for AMC chapters .This hike is rated 3D9, which means a brisk pace and with hills and a few scrambles for 9 miles. There will be rest stops at places with good views and at trail junctions. If you are unsure of your abilities to complete this hike (for example of you have previously been on Level 2 hikes only) please call so we can discuss.

Driving Directions

Meeting place is Ringwood Park and Ride. Ringwood Park and Ride is at 1 Cannici Drive just off of Skyline Drive. This is a block or two before Skyline Drive meets Route 511. Depending on the direction you are coming along Skyline Drive you either follow the NJ transit sign or the sign to Ringwood Public Library. We will car shuttle to the A&P Plaza in West Milford which is near the start of the hike.

I have been leading hikes for the AMC since 2008, mainly in the Wyanokies and other areas of the New Jersey Highlands and also Sterling Forest and Storm King State Park in NY. I lead hikes in all seasons. Future hikes will include these and other destinations west of the Hudson. Distance and terrain vary according to hike location and season and may be 2C, 2D, 3C or 3D.
