Registration is required for this activity.

This bike-packing trip begins and ends at Blackwater Falls State Park in WV. Much of the ride is on gravel forest service roads that allow vehicle traffic though there won't be much of it. Our first afternoon consists of taking a paved park road and on to national forest land to reach a parking lot for the Lindy Point Overlook. We leave our bikes here and hike .80 of one mile round trip to an outstanding overlook. Upon returning to our bikes we continue on rolling terrain with one stream crossing (no bridge) to the Table Rock trailhead. It is 1.1 miles to reach another outstanding overlook where we will camp for the night. Some of this trail can be ridden. There is no water at this campsite. On our second day we will return to the forest service road and continue till we reach a junction for FR244A. After another stream crossing (no bridge) we descend steeply on a gravel road to a narrow paved road on the other side of which is the Otter Creek Wilderness Area. We continue on this paved road to Hendricks WV where we will cross a river on a pedestrian bridge and take more gravel roads to enter the Fernow Experimental Forest. This part of the ride is uphill at about a 3-4% grade till we reach the Big Springs Gap trailhead. From here we leave our bikes and enter the Otter Creek Wilderness to get to a camping spot after .90 miles with swimming as an optional activity. On our third day we return to Hendricks and head to Thomas on a rail trail for 10 miles gently uphill. At Thomas we return to Blackwater on a busy 2 lane road which is also part of the Allegheny Trail. Daily biking mileage: 6.8/13.8/20 Daily hiking mileage: 1.9 rolling terrain assuming we walk to campsite/2.0 with 1.1 rolling and .90 downhill/.90 uphill Helmets, gloves, high visibility vest, spare tube & repair parts required along with backpacking gear that you can safely carry riding a bike. Mountain or Hybrid bikes only. Leader likes a slow pace with lots of time for looking around and relaxing. While Sunday's mileage is a little long about 5 miles is downhill and 10 gently uphill on a 3-4% grade. Trip photo is the view from where we will camp Friday.

I have been leading backpacking trips for the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club since 1975. I enjoy taking the time to look at the scenery and have a relatively slow pace. I am patient with beginners and enjoy helping them learn new skills.
