Overview

This Bike-Packing scouting trip begins Friday evening as an arrive anytime car camping night at Wakely Dam. We begin early Saturday morning by driving to the Wilson Ridge Trailhead. Leaving our cars there we bicycle around the Little Moose Wilderness on first Cedar River Road and then Otter Brook Road. We then take the Otter Brook Trail to the junction of the Lost Pond Trail. This is a bike ride of 18.7 miles. We leave bikes there as we enter the West Canada Lakes Wilderness on a 2.6 mile backpack to the Cedar Lakes #2 Lean-to/Camping area which is on the Northville-Placid Trail. Sunday morning return to our bikes and continue on the Otter Brook Trail which at Little Moose Lake becomes the Wilson Ridge Trail. End at our cars. This is a bike ride of 6.8 miles and hike of 2.6 miles. Note: There is one difficult stream crossing on Otter Brook Trail that may require we stop and retrace our route, find a new camping spot for Saturday night and return to our cars Sunday via Cedar River Road. See Otter Brook Pond Trail trip report for more information. Optional climb of Wakely Mountain. Leader will be arriving Thursday night to camp at Wakely Dam for a Friday ascent of Wakely Mountain. Wakely is #66 on the Adirondack 100 highest list at 3,766'. Let leader know if you want to do this optional climb. Ascent is 6 miles round trip if we drive to the trailhead. We will probably walk which will add 1 mile. Note that this is a scouting trip for the leader. I have visited Wakely Dam, climbed Wakely Mountain this past winter and driven Cedar River and Otter Brook Roads. I've hiked the N-P where we will be camping Saturday night. The rest is new. The roads are sand or gravel and generally flat or rolling. Otter Brook Trail according to the trip reports are generally a flat woods road. Helmets, gloves, high visibility vest, spare tube & repair parts required along with backpacking gear that you can safely carry riding a bike. Mountain or Hybrid bikes only. Leader likes a slow pace with lots of time for looking around and relaxing. Trip photo is the view from where we will camp Saturday.

Leader

I have been leading backpacking trips for the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club since 1975. I enjoy taking the time to look at the scenery and have a relatively slow pace. I am patient with beginners and enjoy helping them learn new skills.
