Overview

Level Two+ (Plus) Sea Kayak Tune Up Trip Date: April 13,2019 (Saturday) Time: Arrive by 9:30 AM, Butts in Boats /Launch 10 AM Location: Pepperel Cove, Kittery, ME - Town Wharf across from Kittery Point, Maine US Post Office. Duration: About 8 nautical miles/ 4 - 5 hours with stops. Get your sea kayak gear out and dust off the cobwebs with this early spring open ocean approximate 8 mile day trip. We'll launch at Pepperel Cove and paddle south along the shores of Fort Foster (Historic Site) then up the coast to Sisters Ledge and Seapoint cove/beach. We will then return, a little farther off shore to tour the several small islands including Wood and Whaleback. Islands. (Historic Sites). After a rest/bio break on Wood Island we'll head back up the shore line toward Fort McClary (Historic Site) and Spruce Cove then return to the put-in at Pepperel Cove. Equipment: 14 foot or longer sea kayak with bulkheads, Wet/Dry Suit, PFD, paddle, spray skirt, (Chart, VHF Radio, paddle float & pump optional). Lunch/snack, hot beverage, spare dry clothes in a dry sack. Conditions: I rarely cancel trips except for lighting or very high winds. If the weather conditions yield waves on the ocean greater than one and a half to two feet or the wind exceeds ten knots I probably will not cancel. But, we will paddle in a more protected environment along the banks of the river and we may possibly be able to still visit the remodeled Life Boat Saving Station close to shore on Wood Island. NOTE: This is an Intermediate Level Sea Kayak Trip suitable for Paddlers with experience doing a Wet Exit wearing a spray skirt. If you paddle flat water ponds and lakes this is a great opportunity to-gain some open ocean skill/experience on a very scenic trip. If you have never done a wet exit from your boat wearing a spray skirt you can attend one of the NH AMC PADDLERS pool sessions in March (9th, 16th and 30th ) to do one in warm pool conditions with guidance until you get the hang of it.
