Registration is required for this activity.

(best time to call: 9am - 5pm, Monday - Saturday)

Join Todd, Chris, and Alastair for a three-day foliage painting adventure in the historic New Hampshire White Mountains in Crawford Notch. Workshop participants will paint, eat, live and share this experience together as a group at the Highland Center, Appalachian Mountain Club lodge. We will paint in the shadows of 19th century American artist pioneers, Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, John Frederick Kensett, Jasper Francis Cropsey, Chauncey Ryder, and Frank Henry Shapleigh, whose original Crawford House artist-in-residence studio still stands on this AMC site. Through lecture, demonstration, side-by-side easel assistance and critique Alastair, Todd and Chris will guide students through the three essential aspects of meaningful plein-air painting: on day one, Alastair will teach how to see the landscape like an artist in what he calls "the Painterly Search." On day two, Todd teaches the nuts and bolts of effective composition with "Methodical Design." On day three, Chris will seek to inspire a personal, expressive approach that synthesizes the previous lessons in "Poetic Vision." Through immersion in this rare opportunity to experience three distinct yet synergistic approaches to plein air painting, the student will explore what it means to "see like an artist" as we capture the grand and simple beauty of the White Mountains.
