NH AMC Level 2 Development Program 7/ 13 to 14 /19 - Combined L2 Development Sea Kayak Chart, Compass, GPS Navigation and Sea Kayak Weekend Camping Trip - East Gosling Is., Maine Island Trail, Casco Bay Maine. Navigation Training and Sea Kayak Camping Weekend We have been granted a reservation for the Group Campsite on East Gosling. Purchased by the Heritage Foundation in 2014. It's still in use for LL Bean trips but also open to the public by reservation. There are still picnic tables on the site which makes it much more convenient for meals but is also ideal to lay out charts for a nautical chart and navigation discussion. I'll send out some information for new sea kayak campers including equipment lists. Here's what we will cover on Navigation: First and foremost will be pointers on reading nautical charts, including finding LAT/LON locations, determining trip destinations, measuring distances and calculating course bearings using a plain hiking compass, tools for trip planning and onboard devices (Portland Plotter and NAV AID) and a discussion on GPS devices and use. Combining these two segments of the development program will give the attendees practical experience on trip planning and actual use of navigation equipment on the water. Although this trip includes open ocean travel experienced intermediate paddlers should easily be capable of completing the 3 nautical mile voyage from the put in on Mere Point to East Gosling Island. We will minimize the open ocean crossings by hopping from island to island on the way. We will also minimize the exposure to the southwest winds and waves by using the protection of the many islands lee side and paddling fairly close to shore for the majority of the trip. To attend you must have the following minimum paddling equipment: Immersion gear (the water is colder in Maine) we will all need to have on our bodies or in our boats depending on the air/water temps either a Wet Suit (Farmer John/Jane) and Dry Top or Dry Suit. 15 Foot Boats with bulkheads and perimeter lines suitable for use with spray skirts (required). PFD's must be worn while on or in the water. Minimum camping gear (a complete list will be provided) : 1 or 2 person tent, sleeping bag and pad, eating utensils, cooking pot/pan and stove (size will depend on your available storage space) (Stoves can be borrowed), minimum three liters of water/per day per person. (No potable water sources available on this island. Navigation equipment list will be provided (Basic hiking compass only mandatory item)
