Overview

A 4 mile one night out and back backpack on the Appalachian Trail in Maryland from the Route 491 Trailhead (Raven Rock Road) north to the Raven Rock Shelter camping area. We will meet Friday night at a warm place to check gear and get prepared for the Saturday morning start on the trail. The climb to the shelter is 600' elevation gain in 8/10th of one mile. After we set up camp an out and back day hike further north on the AT will be done to keep warm and to practice heat and moisture management when hiking. Families are welcome on this backpack. Space is limited so register early. The pace will be slow to allow time to enjoy the outdoors. Depending on the weather conditions, winter gear and microspikes may be required. Trip is suitable for 3 season backpackers who want to ease in to winter camping. Leaders will take the time to assist beginners in the activity.

Leader

I have been leading backpacking trips for the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club since 1975. I enjoy taking the time to look at the scenery and have a relatively slow pace. I am patient with beginners and enjoy helping them learn new skills.

Leader

I grew up hiking in state parks, national forests, and wilderness areas throughout West Virginia and have been backpacking since 2015, including two section hikes on the AT in Virginia. I am interested in exploring out-of-the-way places, helping women gain confidence to be outdoors, and providing a means for everyone to experience extended trips in the wilderness. We humans need to spend time in nature in order to protect it and understand our connection with it.
