Overview

Have your family join us July 31st 2020 after 3:00 PM to August 2nd until 11:00 AM at the Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park in Carmel NY for a fun filled weekend improving your hiking and camping skills and looking forward to backpacking in the future as an option. This program is held at a walk-in rustic level group campsite next to the Appalachian Trail. Rustic level means that everyone will be tent camping, cooking outdoors and that there are only portable toilets available for bathroom facilities. Volunteer leaders from across the AMC system will be assisting in the teaching of safe group hiking and camping skills along with Leave-No-Trace best practices. This program is free and open to the public. Membership is encouraged but not required. Participants provide their own transportation, camping and hiking gear appropriate for the weather, food and snacks. AMC will provide the group campsite and volunteer leadership. Children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and there are specific rules for pets that join us to help keep them and everyone else safe. The detailed risk management policy is at the end of the trip listing. Last years program included group activities while on hikes and demonstrations on how to use various water filters, hang food to keep it safe from animals, how to pack a pack and what to pack for various seasons. There will be lots of gear to show how we go about having fun in the outdoors year round. There will be free time Saturday afternoon that families can either relax on their own or drive to the state park beach area where for a fee they can park and use those facilities. This location is convenient to major highways and mass transit. There are ride share options via taxi or ride share companies to get to the campground. We encourage carpooling and will assist with helping to find transportation if you cannot take mass transit. The photo above is from our previous location in Harriman State Park. The new location does not have any buildings where we will be camping. For more information, contact any of the leaders.

We have reserved group campsite 3 at the location pinned on the map. This is a walk in campsite that has portable toilets only. Water is near the parking area. Driving directions will be provided to registered participants. Here is the caption to the photo which was from the program in 2019 at Harriman Outdoor Center: We did a LNT (Leave No Trace) exercise as part of our hike Saturday. We collected 2 bags of trash on the trail and at one of the campsites and took only a small portion of the berries we found so there was some left for the bears to eat to add to our blueberry/wineberry cake we baked for dessert. Each child was given a task including taking a turn leading the group on our hike. Additional information about the risk management policy concerning children in AMC programs: Participant safety is the top priority on all AMC trips. Minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult throughout the trip. Adults must take responsibility for the safety of children. Every family must sign the AMC waiver (standard waiver of release) and photo-release form. The photo release is optional. If you are bringing kids who are not your own children, the parent or legal guardian needs to sign the release forms prior to the trip.
