Date and Time

Friday, July 10, 2020 3:00PM - Sunday, July 12, 2020 2:00PM

Cranberry Nature Center Hillsboro WV,
West Virginia,

Registration is required for this activity.

This two night bike-packing trip consists of an out and back ride on Forest Road 102 and Forest Road 76 in the Cranberry Backcountry along a pretty stream. These Forest Service roads are the border of the Cranberry Wilderness Area. We start at the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center and then drive nearby to the Forest Road 102 trailhead. We will bike with gear for two nights as far as we want to find a good campsite. There are Adirondack style shelters all along this route. We will base camp for both nights. On Saturday we will continue away on the forest service road as far as the Cranberry Campground and return to camp for Saturday night. Return to Cranberry Mountain Nature Center Sunday morning. There will be plenty of time to swim and have an optional hike into the wilderness area. Helmets, gloves, high visibility vest, spare tube & repair parts required along with backpacking gear that you can safely carry riding a bike. Mountain or Hybrid bikes only. Leader likes a slow pace with lots of time for looking around and relaxing.

I have been leading backpacking trips for the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club since 1975. I enjoy taking the time to look at the scenery and have a relatively slow pace. I am patient with beginners and enjoy helping them learn new skills.

I grew up hiking in state parks, national forests, and wilderness areas throughout West Virginia and have been backpacking since 2015, including two section hikes on the AT in Virginia. I am a backpacking leader interested in exploring out-of-the-way places and providing a means for everyone to experience extended trips in the wilderness. The more we spend time in nature the more we'll want to protect the environment and understand our connection with it.
