4.5 miles Family Hike for Children ages 10+. This intermediate lollipop (out and back with a loop) hike along a part of the Tunxis Trail system welcomes adults and accompanied children ages 10+. If you are bringing anyone under the age of 18 of whom you are NOT the legal guardian, please email leader at least 24 hours in advance at for a waiver which must be signed by the minor's legal guardian. Minors will not be able to proceed with the hike without a signed waiver from a legal guardian. Waivers can be signed on-site for guardians accompanying their own children. No dogs please. This hike features a few stream crossings and some steep ups and downs, so it is not recommended for first time hikers. We will be hiking a ridgeline above the Lake Compounce amusement park, where geological reminders of Connecticut's glacial past are abundant. We will be passing through mature and successional forests, and encounter some individual dwarf pitch pines, with a couple of vista lookouts, before descending into a valley where we will be treated to the lovely cascading waterfalls of the rushing Cusgutter Brook, which we will ascend on our way back to our starting point. Hiking boots are recommended, but well-fitting athletic shoes with good traction are a must. Please bring trekking poles if you have them, and pack extra socks if your shoes are not waterproof due to potential for cold, wet feet at stream crossings. Some copies of the trail map will be available, but if you want to be sure you have your own, email leader for a printable file. Meet at NOON at the trailhead on the cul-de-sac of Panthorn Trail. The address to use for directions is 99 Panthorn Trail, Southington. We will be stopping for brief snack/water breaks, but please eat lunch before the hike. There are no sanitary facilities at the trailhead or on the trail. Rain or freezing temperatures cancel due to high potential for slippery rocks. Co-leaders welcome. Please contact leader Monica Swanson with any questions at 860-205-2836 (cell/VM/text)
