Intro to Winter Mountaineering

For experienced winter hikers/campers who want to learn the basics of winter mountaineering skills; moving and sleeping in these conditions. PARTICIPANTS MUST HAVE PREVIOUSLY CLIMBED AT AN OUTDOOR CT AMC EVENT AND DEMONSTRATED PROPER BELAYING TECHNIQUE. A two-day, one-night introduction to basic winter mountaineering in the White Mountains that offers some of the finest mountaineering training terrain in the country. Participants should be prepared for challenging alpine climbing and cold weather camping experience. The course will focus on learning and refining winter mountaineering skills; traveling over alpine terrain in a safe and efficient manner, proper use of crampons and ice axe, self-arrest, glissading, basic avalanche hazard awareness, decision making in an adverse environment, and winter camping, including how to set up a winter tent site, melt snow for cooking and hydration and how to sleep comfortably in arctic conditions. The Day 2 climbing objective will be based on weather, ground conditions and group abilities; potentially including a summit attempt of Mt. Washington. Basic winter hiking/snowshoeing experience is required along with solid back-country camping skills. Participants are required to provide their own gear and food. Double mountaineering boots and full crampons are mandatory as is a single sleeping bag or two bag system rated to -10 degrees F or below. These items can be rented in North Conway at IME or EMS. Contact leader for full gear list. Participants are required to make their own transportation and lodging arrangements on Friday night. Mandatory gear check meeting Friday evening at the Yankee Clipper. The AMC has a discounted rate at the Yankee Clipper Inn. Group Size: Minimum = 2; Maximum = 6. No refunds if a participant cancels within 2 weeks of the program.

He is celebrating his 50th anniversary of climbing Mt Washington. For the past 14 years he has been climbing and camping in the White Mountains in winter. He specializes in multi day winter traverses with an emphasis on sustainable travel. He is always experimenting with clothing options and techniques and building new gear to find better ways to travel in cold weather. He has been a leader or co-leader on every Intro to Mountaineering trip since 2006.
