AMC's Outdoor Guides introduce backpacking skills such as backcountry travel considerations, Leave No Trace ©, map & compass, campsite cooking and set-up, and basic first aid skills to active adults during this spring adventure. Both nights are spent at the AMC Highland Center with hikes and clinics offered both Saturday and Sunday. This weekend will set you up with the knowledge and skills for your first backpacking trip. Overnights are spent in the Highland Center Lodge, not in the backcountry. Participants will learn outdoor skills: Hiking Safety with Spring Considerations (stream crossings, snow, ice, inclement weather) Map & Compass: Learning to plan routes, pacing of hikes, read maps, orient maps based on land features and compass direction, taking and following bearings, and more Camp Kitchen: Equipment used for cooking, water purification, and backcountry meals recipes and demonstrations. Equipment for backpacking: covering everything from choosing and fitting backpacks, to packing a pack, to tent/shelter choices, sleeping bags, gear repair, first aid, etc. First aid for the trail: NOT A CERTIFICATION, just an overview of common injuries &illnesses related to backpacking and how to deal with them in a backcountry setting.
