Overview

The AMC Advanced Skills Workshop (ASW) is designed to introduce experienced winter hikers and climbers to the basic skills required for climbing high altitude mountains such as Mt. Rainier, Mt. Baker, and beyond. The ASW topics will include roped team travel on moderate to high angle snow slopes and glaciers, ice axe use and self-arrest, advanced belay systems, crevasse rescue, snow anchors, and high-altitude medical issues and medications. The workshop base camp and lectures will be out of Harvard Cabin, and our daily outdoor adventures will take place near Willey Slide on the south side of Mt. Willey which overlooks Rt 302 and the impressive face of Mt. Webster. Should weather or crowding be an issue, we will move our class to Pinkham Lodge/ Joe Dodge Lodge along the Sherburne Ski Trail or lower slopes of Tuckerman Ravine depending on the snow conditions. Full Winter Gear is required and a comprehensive gear list will be provided to all accepted participants. However, please note that you must have 4-season above treeline experience, waterproof double plastic mountaineering boots, ice axe, 12-point crampons, carabiners, helmet and harness. Leaders will provide all ropes, specialized pulleys and snow anchors. In addition, please note that you will need to come to class prepared with (1) Texas Sling and (2) prusiks that you will assemble at home before the class. These specialized tools are described thoroughly in detail in your mandatory pre-class readings in 'Freedom of the Hills' or Selters 'Glacier Travel & Crevasse Rescue'. Please feel free to contact Jim Schroeder (james.schroeder39@yahoo.com) with any questions on the pre-class tasks. Please complete the supplemental experience "Google Form" questionnaire when received from the Trip Registrar otherwise Leaders will not be able to process your application for one of the (8) participant spots. Please note that you must be able to arrive at Harvard Cabin by 6:00 pm on Friday, February 28 for our first night of introductions and lectures.
