White Mountain 4-Week Leadership Teen Trail Crew (Ages 17-19) - FULL WITH WAITLIST

Date and Time

Sunday, July 5, 2020 3:00PM - Friday, July 31, 2020 1:00PM

AMC's Camp Dodge Trails Training Center,
New Hampshire, White Mountains,

Registration is required for this activity.

Teens ages 17-19 join this unique opportunity to learn about trails stewardship and develop their outdoor leadership skills! This program is particularly suited for those who are interested in learning about conservation-related careers or who want an in-depth backcountry experience while accomplishing meaningful trail work projects. This program also includes a two-day Leave No Trace Trainer course and a two-day Wilderness First Aid & CPR course. The 4-Week Leadership Crew is appropriate for volunteers who have prior camping, backpacking, hiking, or volunteer trail work experience. Arrival is Sunday afternoon at 3:00 at the AMC's newly renovated Camp Dodge Trails Training Center, where volunteers will meet their crew and leaders, enjoy dinner and spend the night. The following morning, crew members will pack up food, tools, camping equipment and personal gear, and will then be driven by van to a nearby trailhead and hike in to set up their first camp. Packs weigh 40-60 lbs. The nearby trail work project may involve installing drainage structures, building rock steps, constructing bog bridges, restoring impacted areas, building cairns and scree walls, and other trail maintenance projects. The work will be strenuous, and we will be out rain or shine. After working, crews may enjoy a hike, swim, or game at camp. Crew members all take turns helping with meal preparation and camp chores throughout the week. After a week in the backcountry of the White Mountains, the crew will hike out, re-supply and be driven to their next project site for their second week of trail work. The third week provides an opportunity to take a break from trail work while learning about and visiting an AMC-managed backcountry campsite and mountain hut, as well as the Mt. Washington Observatory and US Forest Service visitor center - a great opportunity to learn about employment/career opportunities. The crew concludes their 4-week experience by taking the lead on the final week's stewardship project in the White Mountains. The crew returns to AMC's Camp Dodge on Friday to unpack, debrief, clean tools and say farewell before the 1:00 departure.
