Overview

Teens 14-16 years of age will spend one week in the White Mountains of New Hampshire engaging in day trips to projects and then returning each night to their base camp at the AMC's newly renovated Camp Dodge Trails Training Center. This program is ideal for beginners who are interested in hiking and trail work, but have limited prior experience in both. The program begins on Sunday afternoon with dinner at 6 pm and an orientation. Over the course of the week, teens may have the opportunity to work on several projects at different locations throughout the White Mountains region. Work may involve clearing brush, cleaning drainage, installing water bars and bog bridges, repairing ski trails, building cairns, working on shelters, painting blazes, and other tasks. You may be carrying 10 to 20 pounds of tools, in addition to your daypack weight. Please remember that the work will be strenuous and demanding, and that we will be out rain or shine. Camp Life: This crew stays at the AMC's Camp Dodge Trails Training Center. The AMC operates this facility under a special use permit with the U.S. Forest Service. Camp Dodge is the launching point for all of our White Mountain Volunteer Trail Crew programs. The crew will stay in bunkhouses with bunk beds and mattresses each night of the program. Participants should bring their own sleeping bag (and pillow if you like) for the crew. Don't forget your headlamp or flashlight; there is no electricity in the bunkhouses. Also available at Camp Dodge are a large bathhouse with bathroom facilities and hot showers, and a dining room with a full kitchen. Our Camp Dodge kitchen staff will prepare all meals but the crews will help clean up after the hearty feasts each night. After dinner, the crew has time to relax, play games, and simply enjoy their surroundings. The crew will finish their project on Friday and return to Camp Dodge in time to clean up for the 1:00 PM departure.
