AMC's Noble View Outdoor Center,
Teens ages 16-18 get out and give back while living and working in the backcountry of the Berkshires of Massachusetts! Volunteer trail crews are an opportunity to meet new friends, learn about conservation, practice backcountry camping skills, and accomplish a meaningful trail stewardship project. Two-week crews are appropriate for volunteers who have experience in backpacking and volunteer trail work. Arrival is 4:00 PM on Sunday afternoon at Noble View Outdoor Center. Volunteers will meet their crew and leaders, pack up food, tools, camping equipment and personal gear for the weeks. The crew will head out to begin their trail stewardship project. Spike camps are located off trail, relatively close to the project site. Packs weigh 40-60 lbs. The work may involve installing drainage structures, building rock steps, constructing bog bridges, restoring impacted areas, building cairns and scree walls, and other trail maintenance projects. The work will be strenuous, and we will be out rain or shine. After working, crews may enjoy a hike, swim, or game at camp. Crew members all take turns helping with meal preparation and camp chores throughout the weeks. The crew will return to Noble View Outdoor Center on Friday to unpack gear, clean tools, and enjoy a final lunch before departure at 1:00 PM.
