Vermont, Green Mountains,

Registration is required for this activity. Please contact registrar below.

As part of the Young Members' MLK weekend winter celebration in Killington, VT, we are going to hike Green Mountain, a moderate peak in Vermont (~2,500-foot peak)! That being said individuals not joining the 20's & 30's weekend are welcome to attend the hike with prior registration! We will be starting from the trailhead at the Big Branch Picnic Area near Danby Vermont at ~10:00AM. The 9:00AM start time noted is when those who are attending the Young Members' MLK winter weekend will need to depart from the lodge. From the trailhead we will hike up the trail to Green Mountain, before descending to Little Rock Pond and hiking back to the cars along the Long Trail (i.e. a loop trail!). The hike is ~8 miles long, and will have over 1200 feet of elevation gain to the summit. We will expect to keep a moderate pace, with weather conditions limiting us to ~2MPH (so ~4 hours of hiking). Please see the below link to the route we will be taking (note that our pace will be slower given the expectation of snow and ice): Expect winter conditions, and be prepared for severe cold, ice, snow and wind. Everyone must bring sufficient water and snacks, and be prepared for the weather conditions with multiple layers, a waterproof shell, beanie, gloves/mittens, winter hiking boots and microspikes (potentially snowshoes). It is strongly recommended that participants pack an extra insulating layer and extra socks, along with a flashlight/headlamp. Anyone deemed not to be sufficiently prepared for the hike will not be allowed to participate. Registration for this hike is required. Please email me directly if interested in attending with an overview of your overall and winter-specific hiking experience.
