Overview

The Hammersley Wild Area lies within the Susquehannock State Forest and is known for its beautiful forests and streams. Trekkers remark about solitude, quietude, and dark evening skies given it is the largest roadless area in Pennsylvania. There are 50+ miles of marked hiking trails including a 9-mile portion of the Susquehannock Trail System (STS). This trip is being led by an AMC backpacking leader-in-training accompanied by David Mong as our official leader. This will be a 15 mile point to point backpack on the STS from mile marker 64 to 49 with 700' of elevation gain on Saturday and some gain and 1,000' of loss on Sunday. There are quite a few stream crossings on Saturday without bridges and the trails tend toward being rough. Part of the route has not been previously hiked by either leader. Pace will be fairly slow but steady. This group will take some time to do light trail maintenance with tools we will bring. This includes cutting small limbs from blowdown in the trail with a hand saw and using a hand weed whacker on stinging nettles. Day 1 we'll meet 3 pm Friday, park at the Cross Fork Trailhead, then shuttle a few cars to our starting point on East Fork Road. Camp is about 3 miles away over relatively easy terrain. Day 2 Saturday we head 6.5 miles further on the STS where we'll camp at the "The Pool", reputed to be one of the best swimming holes in the state. Day 3 we will backpack roughly 5.5 miles back to our cars at Cross Fork Village. Afterwards there's an optional adventure to explore rumors of a gigantic burger, called the "Bubba", at a local eatery. After lunch we depart to pick up our vehicles at the starting point. This trip is suitable for those in good physical condition with some previous backpacking experience.

Leader

I have been leading backpacking trips for the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club since 1975. I enjoy taking the time to look at the scenery and have a relatively slow pace. I am patient with beginners and enjoy helping them learn new skills.

Co-Leader

(Email this person.)

I joined AMC in 2014 and have been an active 3 season backpacker ever since. I enjoy getting outside, making new friends and learning new techniques. I've backpacked a number of weekends on the Appalachian Trail and the Finger Lakes Trail. I look forward to becoming a backpacking trip leader in 2020.
