An exploratory bike ride on the McDade Trail along the Delaware River in Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area will begin at 10:00 AM at the Pocono Envronmental Education Center, 538 Emery Rd., Dingman's Ferry, PA 18328. Registration is required. This ride is intended primarily for leaders and co-leaders of bike rides at AMC's Fall Gathering in October, however others are also invited. We intend to ride from Jerry Lees access going north about 8 miles to White Pines access, return to Jerry Lees and then head south 8 miles to Bushkill Village access, and then back to Jerry Lees. The ride will be about 32 miles. The McDade Trail extends through most of the length of the Water Gap and presents views of the river, tributaries, open farm fields, forests, and historic landscapes. Our pace should vary from 8 to 12 mph depending on terrain. Most of the distance we will be riding will not be difficult, however short portions at the opposite ends may provide moderately challenging climbs over rolling hills. The trail itself is mostly dirt and gravel, some is coarse. A mountain bike or hybrid bike in decent condition with medium to wide tires is best. Bring lunch, a spare tube, a flat repair kit, sufficient water, and clothing to suit the weather. A bicycle helmet is mandatory. The ride may be cancelled if threatening weather is forecast, so please check the status before departing from your point of origin. Contact either of the leaders for registration and further information. See links below for driving directions and trail map.
