This two night 15.75 mile trip is a section backpack from near mile marker 11 where the Susquehannock Trail System (STS) crosses West Branch Road to mile marker 26 at Ole Bull State Park. We meet at the park and shuttle back to our start. Please note that this is a scouting trip for the leaders. While we have been to the area before and know the trailheads we have not hiked this section of trail. But do come and have fun with us as we learn this new area. In celebration of Earth Day we are keeping the distances covered reasonable to allow time to stop and do light trail maintenance. Using hand tools, this consists of cutting out the smaller branches of blowdowns and trimming branches that encroach on the trail. We will also have a hand weed whacker to deal with any stinging nettles we find in the trail. It is AMC's policy to follow Leave-No-Trace (LNT) principles and in the spirit of Earth Day, in addition to packing our own trash out, we will pick up any trash found along the trail making sure our group has as little impact as possible. Friday's 4.75 miles starts off with a half mile road walk to a climb described as the "Cardiac Climb" in the guidebook, with 500' gain in one half mile. Overall Friday will have an elevation gain of 800' with a steep descent for the last mile. Pace will be slow but steady. Saturday is an easier 5.50 miles with small elevation changes. Sunday will be harder with 5.50 miles covered with about 800' of gain and the same for descent after. This trip is being led by an AMC backpacking leader-in-training accompanied by David Mong as our official leader. If you have any questions about the trip before you register please direct them to Rich Armington. Note the attached map with elevation profiles. This trip is suitable for those with previous backpacking experience in good physical condition.

I have been leading backpacking trips for the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club since 1975. I enjoy taking the time to look at the scenery and have a relatively slow pace. I am patient with beginners and enjoy helping them learn new skills.

I've been hiking and backpacking pretty much my entire life. I've planned and executed adventure trips for groups, including Scouts for years. My goal is to spend as much time off the pavement as possible. My challenge is to convince others to join me.
