Overview

Spend a long weekend in spectacular Baxter State Park and give back to the trails of this popular Maine destination, where Mt. Katahdin looms over a rugged landscape and wildlife abound. Baxter Park staff have indicated that our project will likely focus on installing or replacing wooden bog bridges, with a maximum hike distance of 4 miles round-trip, and maximum elevation gain of 1,500 ft from trailhead to project site. Our volunteer trail crews are designed to accommodate all levels of prior experience safely and enjoyably; your trained leaders will teach you the needed trail work techniques. The average work day is between 6-8 hours. Trail work can be challenging, yet incredibly rewarding. The crew will stay in either a lean-to or in tents on platforms in an established park campground. AMC will provide all tents, water filtration, and cooking equipment (although you are welcome to bring your own), and you will need to bring a sleeping pad, sleeping bag, pillow, etc.(a packing list will be provided after registration). The campgrounds have pit toilets, but no showers or running water. AMC will provide all meals, trail lunches, and snacks from Wednesday dinner through Sunday lunch, accommodating all dietary restrictions. Everyone will take turns helping to prepare and clean up meals. Participants must arrange for their own transportation to and from Baxter State Park. We will provide specific details about which park entrance to use once our campsite has been finalized, and we will encourage carpooling among the crew. Once in the park, we will have a 12-passenger van for in-park transportation.
