Overview

Hike to Carter Notch Hut (3288') via Nineteen Mile Brook Trail 3.8 miles, 1900' elevation gain. Carter Notch Hut is self-service in March and the bunk rooms are unheated. The lodge has a wood stove that they use in the evenings. We will have full use of the kitchen but must bring and prepare our own food. The leaders will provide group food for dinners which will be included in the price. Participants will be responsible for bringing their own breakfasts, lunch & snack foods. Other hikes from the hut could be: The Wildcats on Friday or Sunday, (A @ 4422' and D @4062') 5.5 miles round trip from the hut on the Wildcat Ridge Trail (which is very steep for the first .7 miles up from the hut). The Carters for Saturday (Dome @ 4832', South @ 4430', Middle @ 4610' possible side trip to Mt. Hight on the return if time allows) 8.8 miles round trip. There is a very steep section between the hut and Carter Dome. Full winter gear will be required. Given the steepness of the trails up from the notch, we may ask people to bring crampons. Let us know if you don't have them and we'll advise you. For the overnight, you will need a sleeping system that is good to at least 0 degrees. You will need a pack big enough to carry all your winter hiking gear, plus overnight clothing and sleep system, plus you will need to carry your share of the group food which should not be much more than 2 lbs per person. Leaders will provide a detailed gear list. Once payment is made, refunds can only be made if your spot can be filled from a wait list.
