Overview

NH AMC Sea Kayak Weekend Mystic, CT August 7through August 9, 2020 Friday evening, August 7th We will meet at a local restaurant (to be determined) to meet and greet participants staying for the weekend or either of the paddling activity days. Note: These weekend trips with the NH AMC Paddlers are open to intermediate sea kayakers with wet exit and rescue skills wearing a PFD, spray skirt (and helmet on Saturday) using their own or rental equipment including a sea kayak with bulkheads and perimeter lines at least 15ft long. You will also need to register with the leader for each days activity. I'll manage activity participation and communication with participants via the NH AMC Paddlers Website: https://www.meetup.com/NH-AMC-Paddlers/ ---------------------------------------------------- Saturday, August 8th will be our rough water tide race introduction training day. A tidal race occurs when huge quantities of sea water move with the rising or falling tide through a constriction. This narrowing can easily arise from beneath, as a shelf or reef on the sea bed pushes water upwards. If a large volume of water is suddenly pushed through a narrow gap it's speed comes with turbulence resulting in standing waves. Kayakwaveology specializes in training intermediate sea kayakers to become proficient tide race paddlers. This introductory session will assist us in learning how to paddle in a tide race. We'll spend the day on Fishers Island Sound with Kayakwaveology training on how to have fun in a tide race. I In addition to registering with the AMC, to attend this activity you will need to register for it and make payment to Kayakwaveology via the Kayakwaveology website at: https://kayakwaveology.com/ When you register for this activity on the NH AMC Paddlers site you will be Waitlisted until payment has been made. Once you have made payment on the Kayakwaveology website I'll move your name from the Waitlist to the Going list. ---------------------------------------------------- Sunday, August 9th will be our Mystic River/Ram island sea kayak touring day. We will launch from a local Marina and tour the Mystic River from the I-95 highway bridge downstream past the Mystic Seaport. Hopefully the Charles W. Morgan whaling ship will be in port. The Morgan is the last wooden full functioning whaling ship in the world. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystic_Seaport Then we will move down the river to the historic Mystic River Bascule Draw Bridge and historic downtown Mystic village. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystic_River_Bascule_Bridge The trip will continue to the mouth of the river at Ram Island and Noank, CT where e will break for lunch. We'll return to the put-in after the break.
