Have you ever wanted to paddle across a glassy lake or float down a remote river, but didn't know how to keep your canoe going straight? This Course Is For You! During this full weekend instruction, you will learn and practice the basic canoe skills needed to confidently join all our club's lake and quiet moving water trips, plus June 12-14 Moving Water Instruction! On Saturday, you discover how to control your canoe on a pond by paddling forward and backward, maneuvering sideways, changing direction, pivoting, and stopping. We also review safety measures, launching techniques, assisted rescues, cartopping, and other topics. On Sunday, we head to a local river to practice these techniques in a gentle current. This course is targeted at adults in their 20s and 30s, although anyone may join us! No prior paddling experience is required, but all participants must be able to swim comfortably in deep water. All paddling equipment is provided, although you may bring your own boat and gear if you prefer. Lead Instructors are ACA certified and experienced coaches. We will stay at the Corman AMC Harriman Outdoor Center. The camp is accessible by car and public transportation. Friday arrival is highly recommended. Friday and Saturday night accommodations are in a cabin (Mountain Laurel 1) or camping (Beaver Brook Tent Platforms). Camping equipment may be borrowed for free. Modern bathhouse with hot showers and flush toilets are nearby. Dining Hall meals include Saturday breakfast, Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast. BYOB lunches, snacks and adult beverages. We may have a potluck dinner Friday night if folks are interested. Or, you may purchase optional Friday dinner and bagged lunches in the Dining Hall. Cost: Early Bird Price / Regular Price (starts May 16) AMC Members Cabin $185 / $205 Camp $135 / $155 Non-members Cabin $240 / $260 Camp: $175 / $195 Rate includes 2 nights of cabin or camping accommodations, Saturday breakfast, Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast, paddling equipment, instruction, and volunteer leadership. Cancellation Policy Reservations cancelled more than 14 days in advance receive a full refund minus a $25 processing fee. Reservations cancelled 14 days or less in advance are not refundable. If the AMC must cancel a program, registrants will be notified and all fees will be refunded. Normal weather will not cancel this event.
The camp is easily accessible by public transportation. Take either the NJ Transit train from New York Penn Station to Tuxdeo, NY, or the Shortline bus from the 42nd Street Port Authority Bus Terminal to Tuxedo, NY. Review the Van Shuttle pickup schedule before you go. Call the camp office (617-523-0636 ext 56523) in advance to reserve a seat (cost one way: tbd). The camp is about 45 minutes drive from NYC to Corman Harriman Outdoor Center. The gate to the camp is on Lake Welch Parkway at the intersection of Pine Meadow Road. (41.217869, -74.106021). If you use Google Maps, be sure to use the gate location, since the camp location will take you on closed service roads/hiking paths. Drive up to the camp office to check-in and unload your gear. Then park in the big field. We encourage carpooling, but do not arrange it. Try starting a ride share at www.groupcarpool.com.
