This trip is a reworked version of a trip that was scheduled to this area this weekend. We modified the trip to make social distancing more easily accomplished and have a variety of things we will do to help make the program as safe as possible. The trip also had twice as many people as we had room for and this was before Covid-19. We now have more leaders helping and are running two trips in this wild area on the same weekend. The Hammersley Wild Area lies within the Susquehannock State Forest and is known for its beautiful forests and streams. Trekkers remark about solitude, quietude, and dark evening skies given it is the largest roadless area in Pennsylvania. There are 50+ miles of marked hiking trails including a 9-mile portion of the Susquehannock Trail System (STS). This 18.5 mile backpack moves camp each day and includes a 1,400' climb at the beginning and a waterless campsite on Saturday night. This challenge is offset by the very nice swimming hole on Friday and magnificent view on Saturday night. This is a very remote area and the odds of meeting anyone on the trails are slim. Day 1 we'll meet 3 pm Friday, park at the Cross Fork Trailhead and begin our hike from here with a road walk to the start of a 1,400' climb up the mountain. Once we reach Hammersley Fork we will find a campsite along the stream and if we can get that far camp at "The Pool", reputed to be one of the best swimming holes in the state. Day 2 continue north up the STS where we depart onto a pipeline swath which we take to the Twin Sisters Trailhead. At the trailhead we will have a water cache with enough water for the remainder of the trip. After tramping down the Twin Sisters Trail to a gorgeous mountaintop meadow we'll set up camp. Note there is no water here. Day 3 continues southbound on the Twin Sisters Trail, rejoining the STS and heading back to our vehicles at the Cross Fork Trailhead. In Cross Fork there's an optional adventure to explore rumors of a gigantic burger, called the "Bubba", at a local eatery. Note that this is a scouting trip for the leaders. None of the leaders have been on the trails in this area before. Please come and help them explore this great new area.
