Overview

Once a busy inland waterway, the Morris Canal went from Phillipsburg to Jersey City, a distance of 102 miles across northern New Jersey. This included a traverse of the Highlands mountains where it ascended nearly 1,000 feet utilizing a succession of locks and water-powered inclined planes. The Morris Canal ceased operation in 1924 due to railroad competition. It's now being revived as a Greenway trail that takes the trail user on a historic adventure that links together old iron mining and manufacturing industry of North Jersey. During this trail chat, Rich Rockwell, the leading expert on the Morris Canal in Bloomfield, will take you on a virtual adventure with maps and photos. You will learn about the history of the canal and its path across the state and you will explore various hiking options you have to look forward to once the quarantine has lifted-- ranging from casual scenic walks and links to NYNJTC Trails to industrial archeological explorations. This will be a Zoom meeting. Please register at the email address programs.amcnynj@gmail.com to obtain the weblink for this.

Leader

I have been leading hikes for the AMC since 2008, mainly in the Wyanokies and other areas of the New Jersey Highlands and also Sterling Forest and Storm King State Park in NY. I lead hikes in all seasons. Future hikes will include these and other destinations west of the Hudson. Distance and terrain vary according to hike location and season and may be 2C, 2D, 3C or 3D. Most of my hikes do not require preregistration. However you may always call or email if you have questions.
