Overview

Discover famous Close to Home Landmarks this summer in a series of Bicycle Excursions that combine social cycling (properly distanced, of course) and sight-seeing. Our first trip is a tour of Randall's Island, Ward's Island, and Roosevelt Islands. Just off Midtown in the East River, they are loaded with fascinating urban history, gorgeous water views, and stunning cityscapes. We start the trip at the White Castle East Harlem and cross over the pedestrian and cycling bridge. We circle Ward's Island and Randall's Island following the shore as much as possible and travel under the Hell Gate Greenway. We will stop to enjoy the fabulous bridge views, salt water marsh, and check out an electric vehicle charging station before popping over the Robert F Kennedy Bridge to Queens, where we follow the Queens Waterfront Greenway to Socrates Park, an art installation green space with a city backdrop. Then we continue to the Roosevelt Island Bridge. Only 2 miles long, the narrow finger of land once known as Welfare Island, is packed with historical sites, including a gothic-style lighthouse, the Smallpox Hospital ruins, and the FDR Four Freedoms Park. After a pizza break, we head back to Queens and connect with the Queensborough Bridge. At the end of the bridge, this trip ends. You can extend the day on your own by cycling north on the East River Greenway. This trip is a leisurely, non-technical, 25-mile group ride at a moderate pace of 8-12 mph, with breaks. It's almost entirely in parks and on dedicated bike lanes, with mostly flat, paved terrain. The Queensborough Bridge is the most difficult part of the trip with a long elevation gain of around 350 feet. There are a few places where it is necessary to carry your bike up and down stairs, cross through a deep muddy patch, or cycle on metal bridge grates. We will obey all traffic laws and maintain social distance. You must wear a helmet at all times. Cyclists with average fitness, plentiful energy, and a good attitude will enjoy this ride. Any type of bicycle in good working order is appropriate for this ride. Bring your own bicycle, spare inner tube, small bike pump, bike lock, and helmet. Eye protection is recommended. We will be out a full day, so pack lunch (or buy pizza), snacks, two liters of water, and sunscreen. There may also be other pandemic-related requirements to be announced later as determined by the AMC and local regulations, such as face mask worn at all times, gloves, hand sanitizer, enhanced waivers, symptom-free attestations, etc. Trip is limited to 10 participants, including the leaders. Pre-registration is mandatory by clicking the Register Now button. Additional information will be sent.
