This bike-packing trip into the Monongahela National Forest is on gravel forest roads and wilderness trails. It consists 10 miles round trip bike-packing through the Fernow Experimental Forest with a total of 1,250' elevation gain going in and 614' gain going out. At the Big Springs Trailhead we switch from bike-packing to backpacking and cover up to 3 miles round trip. On Saturday we will do a loop or out and back hike with day packs in the wilderness area with a maximum distance of 10 miles. This trip is suitable for participants in good physical condition and open to familes. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. To ensure your safety and enable you to join us on this hike, you must register here on the AMC Activities Database web site, complete the liability waiver form, and have your registration confirmed by this activity's AMC Chapter Leader. You will be notified by email when you are confirmed as a participant. ANYONE NOT RECEIVING A REGISTRATION CONFIRMATION FROM THIS ACTIVITY'S LEADER WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO JOIN THE GROUP AT THE TRAILHEAD. AN RSVP ON MEETUP IS NOT CONSIDERED BEING REGISTERED FOR THIS ACTIVITY - THAT CAN ONLY BE ACCOMPLISHED HERE ON THE AMC ACTIVITY DATABASE WEB SITE. In the event that social distancing (6 feet) cannot be maintained during this activity, every participant must have a suitable medical or cloth mask made of two layers of fabric with them which covers their nose and mouth that they can use. Moderate: Fitness level and/or past experience to sustain the activity at a moderate pace is required. Expect to be active up to 4-6 hours per day. Reasonable breaks in the action. Helmets, gloves, high visibility vest, spare tube & repair parts required along with backpacking gear that you can safely carry riding a bike. Mountain or Hybrid bikes only. Hybrid bikes must have tire tread suitable for sand and gravel roads. Bear canister or Ursack required along with water shoes and trekking pole. Leader likes a slow pace with lots of time for looking around and relaxing. We plan to be very careful to protect each other from getting Covid-19 by always maintaining 6' of distance and will likely wear masks all the time. You must also have hand sanitizer on your person to use frequently. If you arrive and appear unwell we will send you home for the safety of the group. Please do not come if you are ill. Contact the leader so someone on the waiting list can get your spot.
The pinned map location is the start and end point for this bike-packing trip which is in Hendricks WV at a parking area for the Allegheny Highlands Trail.
