Mario Cuomo Bridge,
New York, Hudson River Valley,

Registration is required for this activity.

Enjoy a picnic lunch with the best Hudson River views! This is a two-part trip. Part 1 (2B25) - We will cycle from Van Cortland Park up the South County Trail to Tarrytown Lakes and along rolling hills to Tarrytown. Then we'll slowly ride across the 3-mile Mario Cuomo Bridge, aka the New Tappan Zee Bridge, to Nyack, stopping to admire the views from every belvedere. On the way back, we'll pick our favorite spot for lunch with a view. You can choose to end your trip at this point and take the Metro North train back to New York City. This section of the ride is lovely and rated Moderate on the AMC Activity Rating System. It is about 20 miles on a flat, shaded, and paved dedicated bike paths with glimpses of the Saw Mill River and Tarrytown Lakes. Heading into Tarrytown, we will ride a short stretch on hilly roads with traffic. Pace is about 10-14 mph. Any type of bicycle is fine. Part 2 (2C40) - If you want, we will continue back to Van Cortland Park via the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail. The OCA is built on an aqueduct that still provides drinking water to local communities. We will pass by Lyndhurst Mansion along the way. This section is challenging but fun and rated Strenuous on the AMC Activity Rating System. It is about 12-15 miles on rugged, stony, gravelly, root-strewn, bone-rattling, teeth jarring, packed-dirt single track or gravel trail. We will travel about 6-10 mph. The last few miles back are on the thankfully paved South County Trail at a 10-14 mph pace. Mountain, hybrid, gravel, or similar type bike required. Some rugged trail riding experience required. Bring helmet, tools to repair a flat tire, 1 liter of water, lunch, snacks, sunscreen, facial covering, and hand sanitizer. All AMC COVID rules apply including wearing masks when social distancing is not possible. Be prepared to wear your mask most of the day. Helmets must be worn.. Registration is required. The number of participants is strictly limited. Meeting time and place will be sent to confirmed participants. If you cannot join or are feeling sick, please cancel right away so your spot can be released to the Waiting List.
