Overview

Like a Siren's song, New Zealand calls to every adventure traveler with its seductive promise of pristine landscapes and alpine vistas. Historically thought of as a tramping and thrill-seeker's paradise, bicycling has lately staked its claim on the "Land of the Long White Cloud" with a national network of on and off-road bike trails. We will primarily make use of The Alpine to Ocean Trail, which takes us from the highest mountains in Aoraki National Park, featuring Aoraki Mt Cook, through a geo-park of natural wonders and energy harnessing hydro-projects, around stunning glacial lakes brilliant with mineral-colored waters, rushing rivers, and lush vineyards. Our rides give us an ever-changing view of the magnificent Southern Alps for our backdrop. The second part of our trip enjoys the trails around beautiful little Wanaka, one of the country's premiere alpine resorts, and historic Arrowtown, where we will bike over the Shotover River - home and birthplace of recreational bungee jumping. Our rides for this easy-moderate trip use a combination of sealed and packed dirt or graveled bike trails, with occasional low-traffic roadways, to gently explore the South Island's pristine inner region, nestled between alps and oceans. It is an ideal setting for New Zealand's "dark skies" on clear nights. Which can be enjoyed as you relax in a hot pool beneath the Milky Way or from the University of Pennsylvania's night-sky observatory at Lake Tekapo. Bookending our bike itinerary are two of New Zealand's most striking and dynamic cities: Christchurch and Queenstown. You will have free days to rest your legs or spend a day hiking or exploring Aoraki/Mt Cook and its Sir Edmund Hillary Museum, kayaking, hiking, or picnicing at Lake Wanaka, learning about Arrowtown's gold rush era, or walking about and shopping in Christchurch and Queenstown. We will stay in 3-4 star accommodations and sample New Zealand's cuisine in a variety of eateries to suit any budget or palate, including self-catered in vacation apartment kitchens where available.
