Novice Backpacking Workshop for Adults w/Overnight Backpack-Gatewood/Seneca Creek

Date and Time

Friday, May 21, 2021 4:00PM - Monday, May 24, 2021 1:00PM

Gatewood Group Campground Spruce Knob WV,
West Virginia,

Registration is required for this activity.

This is a three night program for novices who want to build their hiking and camping skills and then go on an overnight backpack. It consists of pre program course content, camping in the relative safety of the Gatewood Group Campground for two nights and then going on an overnight backpack in the Seneca Creek Backcountry. The program is being held in the Monongahela National Forest in WV. Note that Gatewood is a primative campsite with no drinking water or showers. There is no water in the bathroom which has a pit toilet. **Note that Will Schaefer is a leader in training under the supervision of Carey Butler who is the leader of record.** This version of our program is for those who want a little more challenge physically and has more elevation gain/loss with overnight packs in steep terrain. The day hiking portion of the program may include hikes with some elevation gain and loss. The backpack portion of the program may be 4-5 miles each way with 900' of elevation gain each direction.. No pets are allowed in this program. Participants will need to bring their own tents, sleeping bags appropriate for the season, pads, backpack and bear canister/Ursack. Your leaders will help advise you if you don't already have this gear. To ensure your safety and enable you to join us on this hike, you must register here on the AMC Activities Database web site, complete the liability waiver form, and have your registration confirmed by this activity's AMC Chapter Leader. You will be notified by email when you are confirmed as a participant. ANYONE NOT RECEIVING A REGISTRATION CONFIRMATION FROM THIS ACTIVITY'S LEADER WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO JOIN THE GROUP AT THE TRAILHEAD. AN RSVP ON MEETUP IS NOT CONSIDERED BEING REGISTERED FOR THIS ACTIVITY - THAT CAN ONLY BE ACCOMPLISHED HERE ON THE AMC ACTIVITY DATABASE WEB SITE. In the event that social distancing (6 feet) cannot be maintained during this activity, every participant must have a suitable medical or cloth mask made of two layers of fabric with them which covers their nose and mouth that they can use. Moderate: Fitness level and/or past experience to sustain the activity at a moderate pace is required. Expect to be active up to 4-6 hours per day. Reasonable breaks in the action. CARPOOLING: Due to the inherent risk from the COVID 19 virus, carpooling is not recommended at this time. The program is rated a little harder than our other programs due to the elevation gain with loaded packs. The program will still be designed as appropriate for novices. For more information prior to registering, please contact the leader.

I'm a new AMC Volunteer Leader but I have many years of experience leading small groups in the Appalachian wilderness. I'm looking forward to meeting interesting and adventurous people, and enjoying the outdoors together. I prefer easygoing trips so we can take in nature's beauty and share our experiences.

For years I have cozied up in AMC huts and lodges for mountaineering, backpacking, mountain biking, and paddling adventures. Being a new AMC volunteer trip leader, I look forward to exploring new woods and waterways and sharing the experiences with others.
