Overview

The 14,800-acre Willowemoc Wild Forest in the SW Catskills is not a land of dramatic viewpoints and tall mountains like the High Peaks region to its east. However, the Willowemoc has its own kind of beauty and mystery. It has ponds and trout streams, ruins and artifacts left by those who lived there in the 18th & 19th centuries. There are trail junctions with intriguing names, e.g. Junkyard Jct., Coyote Jct., Bobcat Jct. & Gravestone Jct. And, yes, there actually is a tombstone at the latter junction - one to children (11 yrs. & 13 yrs.) who died in a cabin fire there in 1933. The Willowemoc is also made for sled-packing, with a maze of old woods roads with gentle ascents/descents. Total mileage will depend on trail conditions, but will not be more than 14.5 miles, with @7 mi. each day. You can either arrive early morning on 2/4/21 or just before dark on 2/3/21 for a 1/2 mi. walk to a primitive tentsite on a pond. Although this is a sled-packing trip, backpackers are welcome. This outing is appropriate for 3-season backpackers who want to progress to year-round backpacking. Refer to the Winter gear list on the 1st link below. Gear rentals are also on this webpage. The dates above are flexible. If you want to go, but cannot on these dates, let the leader know your preferred dates. The majority rules. The Club's Covid-19 policies will be adhered to on this outing. The 2nd has additional info on the Willowemoc.

I have led outings since the late 1970s for a variety of clubs, e.g. Sierra, Catskill 3500, Adirondack Mtn. Club, Mohonk Preserve & Appalachian Mtn. Club. These have included day hiking, backpacking, snowshoeing, x-c skiing, cabin trips, day paddles & paddling/camping trips in canoes or kayaks. I particularly enjoy leading overnights. I like sharing my knowledge, as well as, learning from others.
