This program is held in the Cranberry Backcountry near Hillsboro WV. We will backpack or use sleds to drag our gear 3-6 miles up the unplowed Highland Scenic Highway and set up a base camp. From that base camp we will go out on 2 days of snowshoe hikes either into the national forest or into the Cranberry Wilderness. This location features most of the hiking and camping at elevations above 4,000' where subzero conditions are likely. Our focus on this trip is more about teaching safe wilderness winter camping and hiking skills than bagging a summit. We may have to melt snow for water. We have had winter trips where we spent all 4 days breaking trail in beautiful surroundings but never got close to a summit. This program is open to families with children as young as 16. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and have the same gear and experience requirements as adults. This trip requires previous winter backpacking experience in cold temperatures. Preference given to participants the leaders know. All participants will need snowshoes, a winter sleeping bag rated to at least -20 degrees F and have winter boots with a removable liner. No single layer or leather boots will be approved. Under other on the registration form, please list what sleeping bag and boots you have or that you need our advice on what to get. Leaders will be using mountaineering sleds and we have some spare sleds we can loan out. Please review the gear list attachment for more information about gear. For purposes of this program crampons and ice axes will not be required. In the event that social distancing (6 feet) cannot be maintained during this activity, every participant must have a suitable medical or cloth mask made of two layers of fabric with them which covers their nose and mouth that they can use.

I have been leading backpacking trips for the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club since 1975. I enjoy taking the time to look at the scenery and have a relatively slow pace. I am patient with beginners and enjoy helping them learn new skills.

I've been hiking and backpacking pretty much my entire life. I've planned and executed adventure trips for groups, including Scouts for years. My goal is to spend as much time off the pavement as possible. My challenge is to convince others to join me.
